Creating a Transformative Community Partnership
A "Big Idea" Case Study
Moving from an Idea to Change-in-Action
Outside Angle worked shoulder to shoulder with the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation to hone their vision, assess feasability, and do the work to create a deep community partnership in McKeesport, PA.
The Challenge
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation wanted to take their social impact strategy to the next level with an authentic and lasting school partnership. With this big idea in mind, the questions of what, how and where began to present themselves.
Our Response
The first step to answer these questions was a rigorous feasibility analysis of the regional landscape and translation of general ideas into specific pillars of an ideal community partnership and school model. We facilitated a collaborative process that engaged multiple stakeholder groups to envision a new school design focused on developing healthy minds, healthy bodies, and healthy relationships. At the same time, we identified and addressed quick wins to catalyze momentum and build trust.
Where They Are Now
After a year-long design process, the new school opened in August 2022, complete with building renovations, added school staff, and new programming focused on healthy and active lifestyles and wrap-around supports for students and families. Now, the foundation and district are working together to create even more opportunities to support students districtwide.
