Expanding Impact

A "Big Ideas" Case Study

Scaling What is Working in Detroit

Outside Angle worked with Downtown Boxing Gym to codify their unique program and build the toolkit and strategy to bring it to many more students and communities.

The Challenge

Downtown Boxing Gym (DBG) has developed a uniquely effective approach to helping youth find a meaningful path. Over 15 years, the team has grown to serve hundreds of Detroit youth, and the model’s consistent success has proven that DBG has an opportunity to positively impact both adults and youth far beyond Detroit. They engaged Outside Angle to distill their story and help them scale.

Our Response

Outside Angle developed a multi-phase roadmap that guided our yearlong collaboration. We began by working to clarify and refine DBG’s story and core work. Simultaneously, we defined and applied the organization’s values to a scaling strategy suited to their goals for impact and influence. Along the way, we worked to build the tools, systems and skills for scale. Ultimately this collaboration focused on arming DBG with targeted strategies they can implement for impact and influence.

Where They Are Now

Today DBG is running pilot projects to expand impact through training and support of adults and developing thought leadership efforts to help share DBG’s approach in a diversity of sectors and settings.

Testimonial

The team at Outside Angle has helped us to clarify and refine our work so that we can take our success supporting kids in Detroit beyond our city and help people globally. We've been evolving for 15 years, and while our kids have experienced incredible success, our own journey is still very much in progress. Outside Angle has helped us plan for our continued evolution and growth and begin the work of expanding our impact.
